Synopsis of our trip

Mike and I are about to leave on our grand adventure. For those of you who don’t know, I will give a synopsis of how the idea to go on a 6 month trip came about.

We were sitting in a coffee shop sometime last spring talking about doing some traveling. We both thought that a 2 week vacation (about all that either of our jobs would allow) wasn’t enough time to really explore a country. It was casually suggested that we quit our jobs, put our belongings in storage and travel for a couple of months. The more we thought about it, the more we liked the idea, and the more we realized that it would not get any easier to do a trip like this down the road.

Thus, the six month trip idea was born. We weren’t sure where we wanted to go, but had both discussed previously that we wanted to see Europe (neither of us has ever been). We decided to go see as much of Europe as we could and then head to South-East Asia. Originally, we wanted to also go to Australia and New Zealand after this, but it was decided that we would probably run out of time and money before then.

Currently, the plan is to start in Dublin, Ireland and then work our way from there to Scotland, England, and possibly Wales. After this, it will be on to continental Europe. We have a rough list of places and sights we'd like to see, a train pass, and about 3 months to explore Western and Eastern Europe and Northern Africa. We think that we'll end up in Turkey and then fly to Thailand where we'll spend another 2.5 to 3 months exploring SE Asia.

We hope that everyone enjoys the blog. We will try to keep it as updated as often as we can (and all future posts will feature many more photos and much less text!). Please leave comments, suggestions, and goings on. We will see everyone again in six short months!

  1. Looks like a well put together plan to me... So that's why you sell your soul to a huge corporation for a few years...

  3. I'm so jealous.....I would love to join you for a week or two in Italy....always wanted to go, never wanted to go by myself....sucks to be single for that reason ONLY! LOL So if you feel like having company and you know about the time frame you'll be in Italy, I will pack my shit and be on a plane! Maybe I could get Colleen to travel with me...together we're pretty funny you know!

  5. Mike-

Good luck, have fun. I can remember us sitting on our couch on 19th avenue talking about wanting to do this someday...glad you've got the guts to do it yourself. Me, I gotta support Jen now while she's in school (my how the tables have turned). Have a blast.

  6. So amazing that you two are doing this! Enjoy each and every moment, as six months will fly by.

When you're in Italy you have to check out Cinque Terre. Five Italian fishing villages along the coast- truly inspiring place.

And of course when you get to my old stomping grounds in Hong Kong I can tell you exactly where to rock out...and probably even get you a nice (FREE) place to stay with one of my pals.

Have a great time, and keep the blogs coming!

Have a wonderful magic trip and be safe. We all dream of this type of adventure and only the very fewest of the few are able to have the vision and pull it off. Be sure to stop by in Stuttgart & pick up your Grandpa a new silver Targa 4S. Will dream and track your fun. Lv Grandpa & Betty

  8. Hi Mike and Emily,

You're on your way now. It's so exciting. We will try to keep up with your travels on our wall map, and maybe I'll master the time zones.
I think it's great that you followed thru on your dream. It's hard to believe that I gave birth to such an adventurous young man. All I've ever accomplished on the couch is knitting...
Keep a watch out for the Italian bracelets.
Have fun, be safe, God bless,
    Love Ya!

I warned you about telling Lea...

  10. If you make it to Morocco make it to Fes. Don't bother buying any leather there as it will smell like a rotting animal once you bring it back home. Make sure to visit a Hammam (aka bathhouse)...it will be an experience you soon won't forget.

And if you are in Barcelona check out the Black Sheep. 1 Euro shots...can't beat it!

    Have fun on your trip!
