1/2 Way Through!

Tomorrow is the 1/2 way point of trip down to the day, as we bought tickets the other day back home to the US. April 17th we'll fly from Singapore to SLC, 2 tickets for $268 total (thanks for the miles, Tom and Boeing)!

We are in Athens, Greece this moment, catching a plane to Istanbul, Turkey for a couple of days before flying into Bangkok, Thailand on the 30th. From there, we plan on making our way north into Laos, then south into Cambodia. From there, we'll go up through Vietnam and end up in Hanoi. From there, probably fly back down to the peninsula of Thailand and travel down into Malaysia, then some of Indonesia (not exactly sure where yet!) and then end up back in Singapore to catch a plane home. As always, if anyone has any "must-sees" along the way, please comment or email them to us, as we have very little lined-up thus far and would love more suggestions.

While Europe has been a blast thus far, I think that both Emily and I are ready for a change of pace. We've been going fast and furious, seeing sites and museums and learning and enjoying an unwritable amount of things along the way. It will be nice to slow down a bit, and spend a bit more time sitting around and soaking up some culture (with sunglasses on and beers in hand)!

  2. Hi kids! Iknow you are not kids any more. Sorry. As for Vietnam, I would be interested to hear about what you see regarding American involvement there.

    My Dad was there(River boats.)

Aside from that, I would like to hear more about the food you have enjoyed!

  3. Hey Mike, it's Eric Seeb. Looks like you are having a heck of a trip. I moved to Seattle, look me up when you get back. Have fun!

  4. Greetings from ND! Mike, your insulin got to Bangkok in record time (3 days). I shouldn't be such a sceptic. I hope it is not cloudy, chunky or otherwise compromised.
I hear there are many beautiful spots to see in SE Asia, and much less expensive, so enjoy!
I have no experience other than the Vietnam books and war movies I've encountered. *Don't go to North Vietnam(a little safety tip)

  5. Em,

I just went back and read your comment about Mike's Italian heritage. Jack's mom came from Chicago and we don't know where in Italy Gramma Berta came from. I've tried to find out before, but all I get is alot of yelling and hands flailing around (I worry about losing an eye).
    Ask Mike about Aunt KK...
    Love,
    Colleen S.

  6. Steve, I will be sure to let you know what I think of the beer. It will be nice to get a beer for less than $5 for once.

Shawn, we'll let you know, as the Vietnam Memorial museum is already on my list of things to do. I'm glad you're tracking our progress and keeping an eye on us!

Eric, how's it going? Long time since I've heard from you. That's cool that you are in Seattle, we'll get together when I get back. Till then, enjoy the gray skies of Seattle winter.

Mother, I think that you might be thinking of North Korea as the one to avoid! I hope we can find some cheaper lodging and food, as Europe has been tough on the ol' pocketbook. Istanbul is a crazy wild time, it's gotten me ready for the full culture shock of SE Asia.

  7. Steve, We will have to let you know how the beer is in Asia. We will probably have to drink a lot of it because we won't be able to drink the water. Good excuse!

Dad, I am looking forward to seeing how Vietnam has reacted since the war. I've heard that they have done a very nice job of turning it into a tourist attraction for the country. I say this with no negativity; at least there are some positives coming from it?

    Thanks for checking Colleen.

  9. Brent has been to Malaysia, he enjoyed a cave full of bats, and a jungle trip, and a really big lobster. I will make him get you the info. He was there for a couple months in 2001.

  10. Brent and Mel,

I completely forgot about Brent going to Malaysia! That would be great if you had some suggestions for us. Pass them on!

  11. Hey. You are a funny soul Mike. Andy is fine but we are both cold. Boise has had a ton of snow which means bad roads. It has been tough going some mornings. I graduate in May (maybe... I just failed a test) so we will have to do a mini celebration when you two get back. Miss you BOTH!

  13. Damon, thanks for the comment. I'd say that we certainly are having a blast; Thailand has been a capital good time and one hell of a healthy culture shock as of day 2 here.

"I wouldn't say that I've been MISSING work, Bob" (office space), but I do miss drinking beers at Die Bierstube. I await our next group outing to the Stube. How about the day after I get back in Seattle? :)

Say hi to your wife and the rest of the Boeing crew, from Em and I.
